So, do you think gifted children (however you personally define gifted) are at a disadvantage or advantage in the current education system? Are there any reasons you have for giving this answer? Lets find out what everyone thinks. Please comment, share and pass along through facebook, twitter, and other social media sites. I think this is an important question, and perhaps more important is the question of why.
Thanks!

They are advantage if they are educated. CV Examples
ReplyDeleteThey are at a disadvantage in the current public school system. I havent had my dd6 tested yet and she may just be advanced, but last year she was in a public kindergarten with 30 other students. The teacher did not have time to keep my dd engaged in class. She wasnt learning anything. They were not willing to work with her and she was bored. When your child comes home and tells you school is a place to give parents a break and that she likes helping teach the other students there is something wrong.
ReplyDeleteI am late to this post but they are at a disadvantage. My daughter was in public school last year in K and I repeatedly told them she was not challenged and bored. It took me getting her tested by an outside group to prove to them she was gifted and needed more. Some teachers were not willing to make changes for her and I was forced to move to a parochial school mid year because they at least offered a gifted program that would supplement her some and allowed her to do accelerated reader. She is still bored and remains unchallenged. I feel like teachers rather argue over who knows what is best for your child then actually work as a team helping your child grow. I also feel that if your child is at average or above they are being left behind.
ReplyDeleteSorry I am just now seeing this post, but YES, YES, YES gifted children are at a disadvantage in the current educational system, particularly the profoundly gifted who are apparently the most underserved segment of students. For the profoundly gifted, there is no box to put them in - doesn't matter if it's public, private secular, private religious, whatever. People don't know what to do with them, can't engage them, so they ignore them, or worse - try to get them out of the way with an ADD or ADHD label, meds, and even Special Ed placement. I'm writing a book about this sad state of affairs - please visit indiegogo.com/pgkidsneedyou, chip in a dollar or two to help with printing, and share the link. Have a blessed day.
